Incompatible Version Error in Valheim : How to Fix It
Valheim has been extremely popular since its Steam launch, but it is still in Early Access, which means it will have bugs and issues to work out. One of the most common problems players face is telling players that the version they are playing is incompatible. If this is something you are having, here is everything you need to know how to fix the incompatible version error in Valheim.
The error will appear when your game client has a different update than the server you installed. You will often run into the error while updating one or the other, but it can happen at other times as well.
How do I fix this error?
- CHECK STEAM FOR THE MOST RECENT UPDATES
Go to Steam and find the game you purchased.
If updates are available, go to the games library to see what’s new. If you’ve turned off automatic updates, please manually download the update and ask your friends to do the same.
Additionally, enable automatic updates to make your life easier. Please double-check that everyone is playing the same version of the game after the update, and then reconnect to resume Valheim. - IF UPDATES DO NOT APPEAR, USE SteamCMD
This is the way to go if you can clearly see that you’re on an older version of the game but Steam doesn’t offer any updates. Fortunately, it isn’t on the console, so you can take control of the situation.
This is the most difficult option available to you, but don’t worry. Simply follow our simple instructions and you’ll be good to go.
HERE’S HOW IT GOES:
To begin, make a backup of the Valheim installation directory’s /savedata folder. You’ll want to make a copy of these files so you don’t lose any progress in the game.
Install SteamCMD.
Inside the installation directory, create a file named “update.bat” and open it. Paste the following text into the update batch file:
C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\SteamCMD\steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir C:\Valheim +app_update 896660 validate +exit
To update the server to the most recent version, save the batch file, close it, and then run it.
The save data folder can then be moved back to the Valheim folder and the game can be started. The game and the server should now be compatible. - GAME CONTROLLER UPDATE
Don’t worry if you haven’t been able to complete the above steps. Since the dawn of time, this cheat has been used to fix game bugs. It is also a lot less difficult.
All you have to do is see if your computer has an Nvidia or AMD Radeon graphics processing unit (GPU). GPUs are critical to your game because they are the brains behind computer-generated 3D worlds. However, because game updates are released every second, drivers (programs that transfer data between the computer and the GPU) must be updated as well.
Go to the system specifications to see all of your computer’s components. If you have an Nvidia card, go to this link to download the most recent drivers for your card. If you have a Radeon GPU, use this link to download the most recent drivers for your card. Hopefully, this will work and you will be able to sail to Valheim.
You should now be able to continue your adventure without the incompatible version bug.
