Far Cry 6: Vaas Insanity DLC – Review

Our Score: 8/10

Far Cry 6: Vaas Insanity DLC lets you play as Vaas. That’s right, you get to play as Vaas from Far Cry 3. But things aren’t as straightforward as you might think. There’s a lot of twists and turns, new additions to the Far Cry formula here that change things up. And these changes will take you by surprise. In my opinion, that is what makes this DLC so good and stand on its own. So, let’s take a look at Far Cry 6: Vaas Insanity.

Become the villain as you step into the mind of Vaas Montenegro from Far Cry® 3 and battle your inner demons in a brand-new DLC episode unlike any experience before from Far Cry. Unveil the backstory of this iconic villain as you explore unique locations in a twisted version of the Rook Islands to collect keys and escape your own mind in this die-and-retry gameplay experience.

What is Far Cry 6: Vaas Insanity

Vaas has always held a special place in the hearts of fans: after all, it is no coincidence that Far Cry 3 – considered by many to be the pinnacle of the series – is remembered above all for the charisma, still unsurpassed today, of its insane villain. And it is precise to Vaas that the first DLC of the Far Cry 6 Season Pass is dedicated to him. Insanity transports us directly into the mind of this lovable psychopath, giving the gameplay of the Ubisoft title a formula that is partially inspired by that of roguelikes.

The idea is quite interesting. You play as Vaas in a weird, distorted version of the Rook Islands. Our goal here is to find the three different parts of the Silver Dragon Dagger. A dagger that once belonged to Citra. This also happens to be the dagger that Jason uses to stab Vaas and seemingly kill him in Far Cry 3.

The Definition of Insanity

Remember Vaas’ speech about the definition of insanity? Of course, you do, everyone does. Well, that mantra is put to use here. You will repeat things over and over. Much like most roguelikes out there, you will have temporary upgrades and permanent skills.

There’s a hub area that you return to after dying where you’ll be able to buy weapons and upgrade Vaas. Temporary tools like money and weapons are lost upon death so you will have to be smart and return to unlock permanent skills.

The Rook Islands also feature a plethora of things to do besides your main objective which is pretty neat, You have Deceptions, Trials of Citra, and a whole lot of challenges that reward you with good loot.

Furthermore, you can play this DLC in co-op! Only one person needs to own the DLC for both people to be able to play it. And I think that’s really awesome. Exploring The Rook Islands with a friend is extremely fun.

Look and Feel

Far Cry 3 was and still is a gorgeous game. The Rook Islands have always been a gorgeous setting. And Far Cry 6 is an extremely good-looking game as well. What happens when you put the two together and a bit of insanity? You get a vibrant and unique world that looks breathtaking.

Throughout the whole DLC, you will be in awe at the visuals and the sheer beauty of what you’re looking at. The lighting, the colors, the particle effects, and the reflections. Everything is just so pleasing to look at. And revisiting The Rook Islands felt with this fresh and new coat of paint was awesome.

But that’s not all. Vaas become a fan favorite for a reason. Because of Michale Mando’s incredible acting and portrayal of the character. Well, he’s back and my goodness does he steal the show. His performance and acting as Vaas is a masterpiece. It is the pièce de résistance of this DLC.

If you’ve played Far Cry 3, prepare to have loads of nostalgia and prepare to be grinning ear to ear as you play as Vaas. It is such a fun and enjoyable experience.

Final Verdict

Far Cry 6: Vaas Insanity is an absolute banger of a DLC. Everything about is incredibly fun and feels like a DLC made just for fans of Far Cry 3. With such a fresh take at the Far Cry formula and with the option of playing it in co-op, this DLC is an easy recommendation.
