ANNO: Mutationem – Review

Our Score: 8/10

ANNO: Mutationem is a cyberpunk action-adventure game with RPG components, with a unique blend of pixelated 2D and 3D graphic style and a rich, dark, and weird plot.

Future Saga

You take on the role of Ann Flores. A future Skopp City security and combat specialist. The story revolves around your brother Ryan’s disappearance and your following search. Ann, unlike many other heroines in this genre, is not a loner. She has a family, including a sister who runs a local pub. And a father with a mechanical body he can’t escape. She has allies and friends, collaborates with local law enforcement. She also pursues bounties, and even has her own partner in the form of Alan Doyle.

The latter is trying to figure out what is causing her “Entaglitis,” a unique ailment that has never been fully explained. The gist is that it improves her combat powers while also increasing her wrath and making her hulk out. As a result, Doyle has incorporated a control mechanism inside her fighting armour.

ANNO: Mutationem City

The game’s main story will take about 10-12 hours to completeBut there are some side tasks that will add a few more hours. While some of the objectives are straightforward, the majority of them are intriguing. And they provide extra insight into the dystopian society. There aren’t that many side missions to begin with, but I’d recommend completing them all to get the most out of ANNO.

Not only did the side quests aid immersion, but the music and sound also kept me captivated in this enthralling world. Electronic music and powerful action beats dominate the soundtrack. There are also a few nods to the 8-bit era woven into the game. The game features Tvoice-acted cutscenes and phrases throughout. All of which sound natural and fantastic.

Perspective of the World

ANNO: Mutationem Boxing

ANNO’s world is well-developed and detailed. The game is divided into two planes: two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D). In the former, you’ll be jumping, rolling, slashing, and blasting your way through side-scrolling Metroid-style settings. Thugs and robots, monsters and bosses will be your adversaries. Ann is pretty handy in a fight, with a parry counter, heavy and light attacks, and a pistol. Everything can also be upgraded, either through skills she develops or modules you find or craft.

ANNO: Mutationem’s other half takes place in 3D hub cities. You can walk around the streets, enter businesses and buildings, and converse with NPCs. You’ll be offered sidequests and errands to complete, as well as hidden collectibles to discover, all of which will help to fill out the tale and universe. Ann is a genuine excellent person who isn’t excessively sarcastic or aloof, as is sometimes the case with similar personalities. Ayane, Ann’s sidekick, communicates with her via a drone that follows her about.

Final Verdict

ANNO: Mutationem is a fantastic cyberpunk game that intrigues you with its story and then hooks you with a great audio-visual presentation. Its gameplay is also quite fun and as a package, it ends up being incredibly fun and fun game to immerse yourself in.
